Ellsworth AFB, SD Housing and Relocation Information
The military provides two options for the use of your BAH. Basic Allowance For Housing (BAH)The first option is living on base. Your second option is using your BAH to rent or buy a house off base. We provide you with military friendly information to help you maximize your BAH.
- The Housing Management Office(605) 385-2568 can answer all of your on- and off-base housing questions. Contact the HMO Office as soon as you know you are moving. You will be provided with the latest information on local housing, referral services and relocation assistance. The HMO offers counseling and guidance before entering into a lease agreement, as well as resolving tenant-landlord disputes.
On Base Housing
The Unaccompanied Housing (605) 385-2567 is reserved for airmen in the ranks of E1-E3 and E4 with less than 3 years of service. You are provided with private sleeping room, furnishings, bed linens and supplies required for comfortable living.
Ellsworth AFB on-base housing is privatized and operated by Beatty Balfour Communities. Ellsworth AFB Homes (605) 923-9000 offers three neighborhoods: Black Hills Estates, Prairie View and Rushmore heights, with over 1,300 duplexes and some single family units for nearly 8,000 base residents. All homes offer fences, garages, and central air, while only Prairie View offers finished basements. They are pet friendly and offer amenities such as: Dog park, basketball and volleyball court and playgrounds. Keep in mind that there is a process involved in renting on-base housing, which may include wait times.

Ellsworth AFB is located near Rapid City, one of South Dakota's largest cities, so there is plenty to do and see, however this area of the state is surrounded by plenty of national forest and parkland, so the small communities nearby are more rural. You can use your BAH to rent on post housing, or to rent/purchase your own home in the Rapid City area.
Rapid City is the second largest city in the state, with about 69,000 people, and is the county seat of Pennington County, population around 101,000. The city is divided by a ridge. Ellsworth is outside of the city, closer to the East Side. The area is somewhat hilly, being in two valleys, with floodplains, which are usually parkland. Additional nearby communities include Box Elder, Rapid Valley, Blackhawk, and Ashland Heights. It is about 20-30 minutes from downtown Rapid City to Ellsworth in good weather. The cities near Ellsworth AFB are: Box Elder, Ashland Heights, Rapid City, Black Hawk, Colonial Pine Hills, and Green Valley.
About Ellsworth AFB
Ellsworth Air Force Base is home to the 28th Bomb Wing, which flies the B1 "Bone" bomber and is one of two B-1B Lancer strategic bomber bases in the country. It is named for Brig. General Richard E. Ellsworth, a RB-36 Peacemaker pilot who crashed in Newfoundland after having flown over 400 missions during World War II, and is located near Rapid City, South Dakota. For more information click here.
