Ellsworth is outside of the city, closer to the East Side. The area is somewhat hilly, being in two valleys, with floodplains, which are usually parkland. Additional nearby communities include Box Elder, Rapid Valley, Blackhawk, and Ashland Heights. It is about 20-30 minutes from downtown Rapid City to Ellsworth in good weather.

Ellsworth AFB on post housing is privatized and managed by Balfour Beatty Communities. There are two neighborhoods, Prairie View and Rushmore heights, with over 1,300 duplex and some single family units for nearly 8,000 base residents. All homes offer fences, garages, and central air, while only Prairie View offers finished basements. Depending on family size and rank, applicants may be placed on a waitlist until the proper space is available.
